The NEC defines hazardous locations as areas where fire or explosion hazards may exist due to flammable, gasses or vapors, flammable liquids, combustible dust, or ignitable fibers or flyings.

Electrical equipment can become a source of ignition in these volatile areas. There are three hazardous location types: Class 1, Class 2 and Class 3. Also there are two divisions: Division 1 and Division 2.
